How to use Area Converter

  1. Type a known area into its row — a 5,000 ft² plot, a 90 m² apartment, or a 2-acre field.
  2. The square-meter, acre, hectare, and square-mile rows fill in instantly from that single entry.
  3. Switching reference units is just a matter of clicking a different row and retyping there.
  4. Remember the squared-factor rule: when comparing a quote priced per m² against one priced per ft², convert the area first, then divide — never reuse a length factor.

Area converter: square meters, square feet, acres, and hectares

This converter moves any area between ten units that span everyday rooms, building floor-plans, and large parcels of land: square millimeters, square centimeters, square meters, square kilometers, square inches, square feet, square yards, acres, hectares, and square miles. Edit whichever row you have a number for, and the surface area is re-expressed across all ten. The factors below, and notes on where each unit turns up, follow.

The most-used area conversion factors

  • 1 m² = 10.7639 ft² = 1,550 in²
  • 1 ft² = 0.092903 m² = 144 in²
  • 1 acre = 4,046.8564 m² = 43,560 ft² = 0.40469 hectares
  • 1 hectare = 10,000 m² = 2.47105 acres
  • 1 km² = 100 hectares = 247.105 acres = 0.386102 mi²
  • 1 mi² = 2.58999 km² = 640 acres

Why area uses squared conversion factors

A common mistake is to convert area using a length factor. Because area is two-dimensional, the conversion factor is squared. One foot is 0.3048 meters, so one square foot is 0.3048 × 0.3048 = 0.092903 square meters — not 0.3048. The same logic explains why a room that is twice as long and twice as wide has four times the floor area, not twice.

Real estate and floor plans

Property listings in the US and UK quote interior space in square feet; most other countries use square meters. To compare a 1,200 ft² apartment with a 110 m² one, convert: 1,200 ft² = 111.5 m², so they are nearly identical. When you see "carpet area" versus "built-up area" on a listing, those describe what is being measured, not different units — convert the number the same way regardless.

Land, farming, and surveying

Rural land trades in acres (US/UK) or hectares (most of the world). A useful anchor: a standard soccer pitch is about 0.7 hectares or 1.76 acres, and an American football field including end zones is about 1.32 acres. Farmers planning seed or fertilizer rates per hectare often need the acre figure for equipment calibrated in imperial units — multiply hectares by 2.471 to get acres.

Small areas: tiling, glass, and materials

For tiling, glazing, and material estimates you usually work in square meters or square feet, with square centimeters and square inches for offcuts. Remember 1 m² = 10,000 cm² and 1 ft² = 144 in². When buying tile, add 10% for cuts and waste before converting your wall or floor area into the number of boxes you need.

Frequently asked questions

What is an acre?
Historically the area an ox-team could plough in a day, an acre is today defined as exactly 4,046.8564224 m² (43,560 ft²). It is roughly the size of a US football field without the end zones.
Hectare vs acre — which is bigger?
A hectare is much bigger. One hectare is 10,000 m², which equals about 2.471 acres. Put another way, 1 acre ≈ 0.405 hectares. Hectares are the metric standard for farmland and forestry.
How do I convert square feet to square meters?
Multiply square feet by 0.092903. So 1,000 ft² × 0.092903 = 92.903 m². To go the other way, multiply m² by 10.7639.
Why is converting area not the same as converting length?
Area scales with the square of the linear factor. Since 1 ft = 0.3048 m, 1 ft² = 0.3048² = 0.092903 m². You cannot reuse a length factor directly for area — you must square it.
How many square feet are in an acre?
Exactly 43,560 ft². This is a fixed legal definition, so it never rounds. An acre is also 4,840 square yards.
What unit is land usually sold in?
It depends on the country. The US and UK often use acres for rural land and square feet for buildings; most of Europe and Asia use square meters and hectares. India and parts of South Asia also use local units such as the bigha, which varies by region.
How big is a square kilometer?
One km² is 1,000,000 m², or about 247 acres, or 100 hectares. A square mile (2.59 km²) is larger — roughly 640 acres.
